Happy New Year to everyone. Here's hoping this year is our best yet!

I actually for the first time in like forever had plans for New Year's Eve - and ones that didn't include performing. Sadly, we discovered yesterday that the show we were all going to uses a fog machine and since I'm highly allergic to it, I ended up having to give it a pass.

Still, I had a fun night of RPing and chatting with online friends, got Very Good News of the RP sort, my little local nieces called me just after midnight to wish me a happy and my 97 year old grandmother IMed me for the same. Plus, I got to watch Bill Cosby getting the Mark Twain award and laugh like a crazy person. (Noah. It's the Lord, Noah. ... Riiiiiiight....)

My Aunt Millie

I just found out that my Aunt Millie died last night.

It seems so fast and sudden. It wasn't even a week ago that mom said she'd been told Aunt Millie had been in the hospital and wasn't doing well. And Friday when I saw my mom she apologized and said she hoped I wasn't mad at her because she and my dad had gone down to see her on Thursday and I'd asked to go with them if they went, but it was all very last minute. Mom said she wasn't doing well at all - just a few moments of lucidness and lots of pain. But she was sure Aunt Millie had said 'I love you' when my mom leaned in to kiss her and I'm sure she did too.

And tonight at the end of my niece's basketball game, mom leaned in and said she'd heard just before she came over that Aunt Millie had died last night.

She's actually my great aunt, my beloved Vovo's sister. All my childhood my Vovo took my cousin, Jacquie, and I to New Bedford with her and my grandfather and we'd spend nearly two weeks with the New Bedford relatives, including my grandmother's two sisters, Aunt Millie and Aunt Addy. My Vovo died almost 10 years ago, Aunt Addy a few years ago and Aunt Millie was the last.

She was a hot ticket. She was a real estate agent when I was younger and used to let Jacquie and I go with her when she showed houses sometimes, and whenever we were out with her, regardless of the time of day, we always had to stop at Friendly's to have a hot fudge sundae 'for her mother's soul'. She insisted that Vovo Borges had loved hot fudge sundaes and that it was the best way to remember her.

She was the only Republican in a whole family of Democrats and I remember one year when I was really tiny they jokingly locked her out of the little downstairs bar my Aunt Addy and Uncle Marty had in their house and she always reminded me of how I was so upset for her that I insisted that I was a 'Publican too so I could be with her and she wouldn't be all alone.

She told me a story once of how when she was a young girl, a cousin of hers, very young, had died in her presence. Aunt Millie said the girl had a very high fever and nothing the parents or doctor did helped and that she would always remember that just before she died the girl started calling out "Que lindo! Que lindo!" (It's beautiful!) and saying she saw the angels and that Aunt Millie had never been afraid of death since then.

My mom's cousin said that this week during one of her lucid moments Aunt Millie said, "Who knew dying would be so much like a party?" and I guess that about sums her up.

In a way she felt like the last link to my grandmother and I hate to think that I'll never see her again. But she lived a good life, 94 or 95 years old, and she got to see her Anthony before she died. I hope that when she passed she was thinking "Que lindo!" too.

And sometime in the next few days I'll make a point of stopping by Friendly's to have a hot fudge sundae for her soul.

Oh, so lovely to be home and warm and cozy, especially after my students were Teh Evil yesterday.

So very very nice!

And my Christmas shopping is done except some little stuff for my students, which is very nice, and I have $30 in Amazon gift certificates, which, well... my Christmas shopping is done so I guess I can spend them on me. :)

Feeling low

Feeling rather low today. Talked with my PT guy - who is wonderful, by the way - about some of the realities of my rotator cuff tear.

Bottom line is that if he/we don't feel it's getting at all better in the next few weeks he probably won't recommend more PT since there's no point in doing it if it doesn't help.

Which brought up the very real possibility that I will need surgery in the future - if not to fix the tear, then to decrease the bone over the tendon as it is impinging on the tendon and may be aggravating the problem.

And he wanted to let me know that even if all goes well, either with PT or surgery, scar tissue may well develop which could mean that I might never be completely pain free. I told him that I've had rheumatoid arthritis for 7 years now and haven't had a pain free day in all that time. If I can heal enough to manage to put on my clothes or shower or dry myself off without crying? I'll take that.

I wasn't really bothered or upset by the conversation while I was there, but when I got out to my car later I suddenly got all teary and desperately wanted nothing more than to go find someone who'd just wrap their arms around me and let me sob for a while.

And then I realized that I don't have anyone like that in my life anymore. Not ones who would be comfortable with it or where I wouldn't feel like I was dumping more on them than they needed to worry about or deal with. And suddenly I felt very alone even though I know there are oh so many people who care for me.

So, did my Physical Therapy eval yesterday. Ouch. Big, big ouch. Will be returning twice a week for the next four weeks and then reassessing. Yes, my superspinatus tendon has a serious tear in it. And since it runs from the front insert point of the shoulder, up and under the bone and down to the shoulder blade, it explains the pain in various places as well as the pain down the arm ('referred pain syndrome'). Still most of my range of motion is good and I've started all my first exercises. AND, he was kind enough to write up all his stuff last night and fax it over so the orthopedic specialist would have it today.

The good news is, according to the specialist, that the tendon does NOT have a complete tear and therefore, at least at this time, I do not require surgery. I may need some later to remove some bone that could be impinging on the tendon, but that's for much later worries.

So, yay! Still lots and lots of pain, but yay!

So, I have one week left of intensive rehearsals before tech week for Steel Magnolias starts. Yes, if you're anywhere near the Southern NH area and want to see a fabulous show, contact me and I'll tell you how to come see it.

I've been and will be a little crazy busy and even when I'm online I often don't/won't have the brain energy to do much.

Also, as some of you know, I've been having bad shoulder pain since May which we were attributing to issues with my rheumatoid arthritis. I had an MRI Wednesday and it turns out that the pain is actually due to a full thickness tear in my right rotator cuff. Which explains why I haven't been able to sleep more than an hour or two at a time because of the pain since May. I'll know more about the whens and whethers of surgery next Friday when I get in to see the orthopedic specialist, but it's not looking great that I'll be able to avoid surgery.

Which means 6 weeks unable to use my dominant arm. And since I effectively live alone... it's going to be a real challenge. I have a man who rents rooms in my house and we're friendly, but not friends, and he's really not someone I'd feel comfortable with helping me dress and shower and such, so...

So, I'm a little stressed and trying not to cross bridges till I come to them, but yeah... distracted, low brain energy, etc.

If you haven't seen me around much it's because I'm crazy busy and in rehearsals for 3 shows at the moment. One goes up this Saturday, one goes up next Thursday and Friday and then I'll have a whole week off before I'm back knee deep in my three night a week rehearsals for Steel Magnolias.

No 3-D?

So... apparently my eyes don't work together well enough to let me watch a 3-D movie. Everything is all funky green or red and there is no 3-D just a muddled mess. Which is not the end of the world as luckily the DVD also has a non 3-D version, but I do have a nasty headache from trying to make my eyes behave themselves.

I suppose this really shouldn't surprise me since I've known for some time that I have very little depth perception, which, now that I think about it in relation to the whole 3-D situation makes sense since both require your eyes to work together. Still odd though.
